Caledonia Worldwide

Caledonia Worldwide is a specialist tour operator organising cultural and educational trips to Cuba, Central America, France, Spain and Italy. Founded in 1996, the company is owner-managed with a small team of well travelled, friendly staff with personal knowledge of our destinations.

Ethical Commitment:
We organise and promote socially and culturally aware travel, and strongly believe that our trips provide a unique and authentic way to be involved with local people when travelling. We encourage our clients to learn more about the cultures, traditions and way of life of the local people as well as explore and respect their surrounding environment. Our trips are organised through a wide network of local representatives, guides, teachers, travel and accommodation providers, all of whom facilitate getting to know the local scene beyond the mainstream tourist trails. By operating locally, we are able to actively contribute to the local economy.

We have our own experienced team in Cuba which means that we manage our Cuban trips direct and can guarantee that they provide local employment and involve local suppliers. Tailor-made itineraries for groups of all sizes or individuals focus on cultural or educational themes such as language classes, dance and music workshops and hiking in national parks. We provide practical support to local youth and community projects in Santiago de Cuba with donations of materials and clothing, and we regularly visit our overseas partners to keep up to date with local developments.

My daughter and I used Caledonia Worldwide for a tailor-made trip to Cuba. We are not experienced travellers and were nervous about taking on such an adventure which was well out of our comfort zone. Kath and her team put our minds at rest straight away. They listened to what we wanted and it was clear they really know Cuba, its culture, and people. We wanted to experience the country at a local level, we didn’t want the usual package holiday. We were given a packed itinerary that provided that and more. We travelled widely, staying with local people rather than hotel chains. The homestays were all lovely and each of them very different. All of the prearranged tours that Caledonia provided, be it the two hours around Havana or the three days into the mountains, really delivered. Our tour guides were all local people, who displayed real knowledge, and were patient and helpful.
Our in-country travel was also arranged by Caledonia, mainly consisting of public transport and private taxi. This all went like clockwork, which is no mean feat in Cuba. We were met, transferred and helped throughout.
We really feel we had a unique experience of the country, but not only that, we felt Caledonia had been mindful of the environmental and local impact of such a trip. We stayed with local people in their homes, ate local produce, the guides were local and our money went directly to them.
It was the trip of a lifetime and we left feeling good about our visit!

Our first trip to Cuba , we wanted the feel of independent travel but with a bit of a security blanket! Caledonia Worldwide provided the answers constructing a brilliant itinerary which was vibrant and colourful. We flew in to Holguin and travelled around the Eastern Region by minibus and public busses. Our guides were all locals who were charming and knowledgeable adding fascinating insights at all our visits. Our accommodation was either home stay or state hotel in all cases they were lovely places run by lovely people, We travelled from the coast to the mountains returning a few times to Santiago de Cuba where the music and dancing was second to none. We always felt that the way the trips, guides and home stays were set up that the people involved were treated equitably and that we , given that we are tourists, had a footprint that could be sustainable. Looking forward to getting back again.

Having visited Cuba with Caledonia Worldwide, I returned to them to organise a tailor-made trip to Colombia to give me the chance to see different aspects of the country. The driving idea was to visit the World Salsa Festival in Cali but I also wanted to see particularly the countryside and, after some further background research, some of the Carribean Coast. At the planning stage the staff were very informed and came up with ideas for trips and places to stay which we quickly whittled down to a very varied 2-week itinerary.
I started in Cali, staying in a nice but very traditional area. I am not one for 5* hotels and the recommended hotel was a quiet 3* hotel which had a lovely authentic Colombian feel to it. There were many restaurants and bars in the area and on the daytime the centre of town was only a 10-15 minute walk away. A local guide was booked to show me the area and accompany me on the evening to various dance and jazz clubs and of course the festival. He went to great lengths (far beyond the call of duty!) to show me his town and to make sure I was immersed in Colombian life. Like many people I suspect, I was a bit concerned about security before I went but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The local people were all so friendly and welcoming, and although as a conventional tourist destination, Cali might not be the first choice in Colombia, I really felt at home and was genuinely sorry to leave.
I then visited Cartegena on the coast, after which I came back down to the coffee region in Armenia. In both regions, the local guides were very passionate about their areas and nothing was too much trouble to make sure I had everything I needed (or wanted!). The variety of local trips in a comparatively short space of time was incredible, seeing the coast & visiting the Rosario Islands in the beautiful colonial Cartagena and then the countryside, the small traditional towns and a coffee hacienda in Armenia – while still leaving enough time to chill and take it all in.
All the excursions and travel arrangements made by Caledonia went exactly as planned (which is an achievement in Sth America) and I don’t think I could have experienced more in the short time I was there. I left feeling I had gained a real insight into this beautiful country and its incredible people.
