Gorge View Cottage

An award-winning sustainable four-star self-catering holiday cottage for two, nestling in the foothills of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Originally an old gardeners cottage, it was recently fully renovated to exacting environmental standards whilst maintaining its natural charm, with attention paid to sustainability and comfort throughout.
For anyone needing a gentle break from the pressures of life Gorge View Cottage has it all; a haven for walkers and nature lovers, with easy access to stunning walks around the Mendip hills and the famous gorge. The caves, pubs and cafés just a few minutes’ walk away.

A Green Tourism Gold and Visit England Four Star Gold rated cottage with everything you need provided. Bright and airy in summer, warm and snug in winter. Lots of information on things to do, with an emphasis on car-free activities.
The immediate village boasts a number of unique attractions: the UK’s largest gorge and highest inland cliffs. The caves including Britain’s most beautiful stalactite cavern. Here Britain’s oldest human skeleton was found: Cheddar Man, over 9,000 years old. And Cheddar is the home of the world famous cheese and you can still see it made in the last production facility in the gorge.
The cottage provides an excellent base for exploring further afield with Somerset being an extraordinary county of variety and contrast: hills and levels, coast and moors, heritage and history, mythology and magic. Try Glastonbury, home of the famous festival and also the Tor, ancient Abbey and quirky shops. Or the small city of Wells with its beautiful Cathedral, lovely markets, and friendly cafes. Wookey Hole Caves, the Somerset levels and coast at Brean Down. All of this within 15 miles.
For cities try Bristol, once England’s second city and now famous for its links with Brunel including the floating harbour, suspension Bridge and the SS Great Britain. Or the UNESCO heritage site that is Bath with glorious Georgian architecture, Roman Baths, abbey and narrow arcades of shops.
But you don’t have to get out and about. The cottage itself is a perfect retreat: cool, light and airy in summer, with under-floor heating to keep the cottage snug when temperatures drop. And in the colder months the log-burning stove is perfect for cosy evenings. Outside you can idle on the patio catching the evening sun, or wander in to the large main house garden, run on organic and permaculture principles and an accredited Wildlife Garden. If you want to cycle but don’t have bikes then we’re happy to lend you a couple, ideal for wheeling off down the Strawberry Line.
