Sapa O'Chau Travel Social Enterprise

Sapa O’Chau Travel Social Enterprise is the Silver Award winner for World Responsible Tourism Awards 2016 – Poverty Reduction and Inclusion Category. It is also one of the finalists for World Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2016 – Community Category. Our Founder and Director Ms Shu Tan is named by Forbes Vietnam as one of the 30 under 30 for 2016. Since Sapa O’Chau Travel was established in 2013, it was since listed on Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Travelfish and other guide books. Ms Shu Tan, a Black Hmong, founded Sapa O’Chau Cooperative in 2011 to support the training of youth in Sapa to be trekking guides.The students earned their trekking license and many still work for Sapa O’Chau Travel Social Enterprise to this day. Sapa O’Chau Cooperative had its first ethnic minority owned homestay in Lao Chai village.

In 2013, Sapa O’Chau Travel earned its international tour operator license to become the first ethnic minority owned tour operator. Sapa O’Chau fully sponsors the high school education of 30 students and provide English coaching to 10 youth with the help of our volunteers from all over the world. Sapa O’Chau also sponsors 20 scholarships for students studying in college or university. In 2016, Sapa O’Chau collaborated with Ministry of Labour (MOLISA) and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MOCST) to train 26 youth as tour guides. They have to undergo a two month theory training by MOLISA followed by a three week practicuum with MOCST before being awarded their tour guide license. Sapa O’Chau provided the accomodation and internship. Sapa O’Chau collaborates with 13 ethnic minority owned homestays. This provides financial income for homestay owners to support the education of their children. All our 30 tour guides are ethnic minority. Two third of our staff are women. Sapa O’Chau has a representative office in Hanoi for guests to enquire or place a booking as well as a guest lounge for our guests to enjoy free wifi, hot shower, or nap. In Sapa, Sapa O’Chau has a cafe for our guests to grab a bite before going or coming back from a trek. Shower facilities are also available for our guests to take a hot shower. This is to thank our guests for travelling responsibly to support our community sustainably. O’Chau means thank you in Hmong language.
